Living in SF necessitates being a working-parent x2 household. Which means both girls need childcare.
My older daughter transitioned from an in-home daycare to an in-home preschool this fall. It's in our neighborhood
and hosts 10-12 kids each day, which is perfect. Emily fit right in immediately. Such a blessing. Our younger daughter, Charlotte, is going to the daycare Emily started at as a baby, where she's one of 3 or 4 other toddlers. We love these ratios - they seem just right for their ages.
We were lucky to get spots in each place, and feel even luckier that both worked out so well. Especially on days like today, when coming to work and getting away for a bit feel like a... luxury. (I know I wouldn't feel this way, if we weren't so confident the girls are in capable hands.)

Day 20 :: Street Festivals
![]() |
Both girls with dad, on ponies! |
We've been going every year since Emily was born, so this is her 4th. The first year she was only 5 months old, and it rained the e-n-t-i-r-e time. The past 2 years (when she was 1 and 2 yrs old) she got really excited for the pony ride, only to panic just as they started to move.
This year, however, was different. My 3 yr old got on her pony and stayed on. And so did her sister. It was a great day! And on top of that it was my birthday. Lucky me :)

Day 19 :: South Park
There's a tiny park downtown, in the middle of a city block. It's tucked away so nicely it'd be easy to miss if you weren't looking for it.
It's called South Park and one of my favorite brunch spots is inside: The Butler & The Chef
Finding myself with a rare Saturday morning to myself, I met my sister there earlier today. Getting to have brunch with her is itself a treat. So heading to this place was icing on the cake.
I snapped this pic at the end of our meal (we dug into the eggs benedict and French toast too quickly to capture them on my phone). They always bring those little chocolate truffles with the check. Another reason I love this place.

Day 18 :: Strike
If BART can strike, I'm giving myself permission to also. For one day. It's been a long week.
Thursday, October 17, 2013
Day 17 :: Local Radio
My commute, particularly to work, is made much more enjoyable by several local radio stations: 99.7 / 97.3 / 104.5 / 105.3
I tend to flip back and forth between morning shows, and when doing so this morning I heard a familiar voice. It'd been years (maybe 15?) since I'd heard him on the air. But there it was: John Heffron! (He was part of a Detroit morning show when I was in college, and his sense of humor is spot on with mine. I listened to his show religiously.)
He actually won Last Comic Standing years ago, but I don't if anything came of that. He still tours, and this weekend he's going to be here in SF. I haven't seen him in a while. Maybe we'll have to plan a little date night... !

Day 16 :: Medical Professionals

Here in SF we've been really fortunate to have, almost without fail, good experiences with our healthcare providers. Guess our supply & demand ratio is at a harmonious level.
My older daughter had her first teeth cleaning recently. Such a big girl, opening wide just as we'd practiced. Did you know chocolate is a toothpaste flavor?! Chocolate?? She was thrilled.

Day 15 :: Anthropologie
Another perk of living in SF is my proximity to Anthropolgie. I've loved these stores since walking through one in Chicago, by chance, like a million years ago.
Out here I cross paths with 2 rather regularly. One on 3rd Street in Berkeley and one in downtown SF. It's always worth ducking inside to take a peak. Their window displays and interior décor never cease to inspire me.
(PS - I may have spoken too soon yesterday when I was moaning and groaning about a possible BART strike. Seems that another transit authority out here is also talking of striking this week. Would make for even more traffic than I'd imagined. Ugh.)

Day 14 :: Public Transportation
![]() |
http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Cell-service-stays- on-during-BART-protest-in-SF-2335111.php |
I used to ride their trains to/from work all the time, but with 2 kiddos at different schools we finally gave in and got a second car a few months back. Our 10+ years of carpooling came to an end because practicality won out. {What we needed was more hours in the day, and not having to carpool anymore was a way to "buy" more hours. Or at least minutes.}
Today I'm reminded of the quote "you never know what you have until it's gone" because our BART system might go on strike, over disagreements about their new contract.
If a strike happens, the roads will be JAM PACKED with traffic. So today I'm appreciating the trains and how they keep lots of potential cars and their drivers off the roads. My commute will probably double in duration if all those public transportation riders are on the road with me tomorrow. Oy vey.

Day 13 :: Sushi

Some meals are better than others, in terms of my kids' behavior and our ability to actually relax and enjoy ourselves.
But the service and food is always spot on. We're creatures of habit (an understatement) and we order the same thing every.single.time. Bernal rolls and BBQ ribs, baby.
And when eating there we tend to splurge and get dessert. Like banana lumpia. SO good.
Their sign out front is a fish, as you can see. When she was a baby, Emily used to make the cutest fish face whenever we passed by. I'm trying to get Charlotte to do the same, but no luck yet. Maybe we need to go more often?!?

Day 12 :: The Zoos
Living in SF we have our city zoo and the Oakland zoo within easy driving distance. We're members at both, but usually stick to the one in town since it's closer.
However, the Oakland zoo has elephants, so when one of us (Emily) gets a hankering for to see some pachyderms, we head over there.
Funny zoo story:
We once saw a brown bear at the San Francisco Zoo trying to balance a rock on his head. He was in the water, and using his clawed paws he was trying to get this brick sized rock on top of his head. He managed to get it up there, and it stayed for a good 5 seconds before falling off into the water. It was hysterical. We got a choppy video of it, which I still chuckle at from time to time.

Day 11 :: North Star
My little corner (or hill, to be precise) of SF is called Bernal Heights. We bought our house 4 years ago this month (!) and have been happy to call this 'hood home ever since. For city living, it's pretty much all we could ask for. Parks, cafes, a library, grocery store, kid's consignment shop, butcher shop, wine bar.
Another perk (since I'm a bit directionally challenged :: an understatement ), is the fact that Bernal's a hill. A small bump of yellow grass with a few trees sticking out on top. It's the only one of it's kind on the horizon, so I can see it from all over the city. That hill is my north star.

As I inch closer and closer to home, I imagine my girls putting on their little shoes, getting ready for me to pick them up from school.
Or if my husband's grabbing them that night, I imagine them all sitting around the table eating dinner. (It would actually be a miracle if that was the scene at home, but hey - it's my daydream.)
Then I imagine them hearing me open the garage door and racing to the front window, their faces lighting up with smiles.
Once I'm inside we'll dance around to a Disney CD, bopping along to the "The Monkey's Uncle." Their favorite. Mine too. I love that hill.

Day 10 :: The Wild Parrots

When I got home this evening, I heard all about how today, while playing in our yard with Grammy and Grampa, my daughters saw our "green parrot friends" and heard them "squeaking" overhead.
(I love that wild parrots visit us from time to time. And Emily can even identify their "squeak" !)
These parrots are infamous around Telegraph Hill in the city, but they also make appearances in our neck of the woods. We actually hear them flying by quite often - they even landed in our spikey tree, a few years back. (Another rad thing about that tree!)
These are some pics I quickly snapped through our screen door when they decided to stop by. (I didn't want to risk opening it and having those curious creatures sneak into our house.)
After enjoying the view and breeze for a couple minutes, they up and flew away. Thanks for the visiting guys!

Day 9 :: Sunset
Tuesday, October 8, 2013
Day 8 :: Trees

Starting in our very own backyard we have a beast of a tree. A couple months ago we found out it's a Black Acacia. And it was out of control. (So much so, our neighbor requested in writing that we have it trimmed - he was worried it would fall on his house during a storm.) So we hired a few tree trimmers to give that guy some definition. He's a still a beast, but a more shapely beast.

We've also got what we've always referred to as a Spikey Tree (see below). I guess the technical name is Pachira quinata or Pochote, which we also learned from our tree trimmers. Apparently these trees are really rare, and tend to impress all the landscapers who visit our yard. !!
And while not technically ours, the neighbors have a Birch tree in their yard, which is a real treat since I've never seen any others out here. I love the shuffly sound the leaves make when they blow in the wind.
Over the weekend we went on a walk and Emily asked, "Uh, Mama do you know what that tree is? It is bamboo." Who knew she could identify those!? Not me.
Soon after that we passed by a Eucalyptus tree, and she plugged her nose and said "Eww, gross." (We have a million seeded Eucalyptus trees in the bay area, and rumor has it - it's a rumor because I'm too lazy to google it - that they aren't native to this area and actually have an aggressive growing pattern, which threatens some of our local greenery. Yikes.)
Come to think of it, Emily's good at pointing out palm trees too, and wondering about their coconuts.
Most of these trees I couldn't identify until adulthood. So it's pretty cool she's growing up thinking they're just a normal part of nature. Hopefully, with time, we'll help her appreciate how lucky she is to have them at her fingertips.
And there you have it. That's a round-up of our local trees.

Day 7 :: Ikea
In reviewing my day, I had a hard time coming up with something local I felt thankful for. I thought and thought and thought, then finally remembered that I ran to IKEA to get a couple bags of much needed frozen meatballs during lunch.
You see, last week we ran out and grabbed some off-brand meatballs during a Target run and Emily refused to eat them. The moment they touched her lips she announced that they tasted "weird" and then she boycotted her entire dinner.
So today I'm grateful for IKEA. Grateful they have meatballs my selective daughter will eat for dinner - days and days in a row. (Tonight after bringing these bad boys home she gobbled up 5 in as many minutes.)
Thank goodness for those delicious, frozen, IKEA Swedish meatballs.

Day 6 :: The Dining Room
This is a late Sunday evening post, so I'll keep it short and sweet: I appreciate our dining room.
We have cute chairs. The petite table fits the room perfectly. And there's a hodgepodge fall centerpiece going on in there right now that looks really pretty by candle light.

Night-night.

Day 5 :: Our Backyard
Our yard is tiny, but we love it. We put in grass this summer - such a good decision. It takes a lot of water, but watching the girls play makes it totally worth it. (Now if we could just win our war with the local critters who keep trying to demolish it at night... Ah, the yin and yang of life.)
Anyway, today was the hottest day of the week, so our girls kept cool in their pool :)

Day 4 :: The Bay Bridge
(Source: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-11/sf-bay-bridge-gets-5-300-ton-delivery-from-china.html)
San Francisco is definitely known for its Golden Gate Bridge, but my hands-down favorite bridge into the city is the Bay Bridge.
{Funny story: When driving out here for the first time 13 years ago, my husband and I took Route 80 the entire way, which would have popped us right onto the Bay Bridge and into the city. But since I equated SF with the Golden Gate, I had him reroute our path over to the North Bay so we could enter the city via that bridge. See what I get when I decide not to go with the flow? Definite life lesson learned that day.}
Now why is this my favorite bridge? The views. The 2 spans. Midway across there's a tunnel through an island. And it lights up so pretty at night. But most importantly, it's the gateway back to my family each night. Yep, I love this bridge.
It's divided into 2 sections by all that greenery in the middle (Treasure Island), and one half was recently completely rebuilt. (In 4 short years.) Here's a peek at my morning drive.
The new span on the left is BEAUTIFUL. You could never tell when driving on it, but now that you can see it up close that old one looks rickety. And ancient. The first day I drove across the new span, all I could think was that the old bridge looked just like a larger version of the buildings Doozers built (and Fraggles ate) on Fraggle Rock.
Am I right?!

Day 3 :: The Weather
While I definitely miss the autumn weather this time of year, I must admit that I love having 80+ degree October days.
My older daughter loves wearing dresses, so our morning routine on cold days goes a little something like this:
Me: "Come on Ems, time to pick out your clothes."
Emily: "Can I wear a summer dress?"
Me: "Nope, it's too cold out today. You need sleeves and pants to keep warm."
Emily: "How about tights and a sweater with a summer dress?"
Me: "You can wear a dress, but the dress must have sleeves."
Emily: "But I want to wear a pretty dress."
Me: "Sure, you can wear a pretty dress. But you also need sleeves. Pick one out with sleeves. Come on, you have lots of dresses to choose from." (We stocked up for fall, so this is absolutely true.)
Emily: "But ..."
This goes on for a bit until I finally break her, and she settles on a dress with sleeves. (In her defense, I sewed most of her summer dresses, so they definitely are prettier than the ones with sleeves ;)
This little exchange is why days when it's warm enough for her go without the dreaded sleeves, are especially good days. For both of us.

Day 2 :: Santa Rosa
I traveled up to Santa Rosa for work today, something I haven't had the chance to do in a w-h-i-l-e. I used to make that drive all the time, but ever since my daughter (now daughters) came along, I've opted for the predictability of being in one place all day. Boy does the day fly by when I'm on the road though.
I took the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge over, and the views across are AWESOME. To make it even more of a treat: M83's Midnight City was playing on the radio as I crossed, which just might be the perfect bridge song.
Ok, I'm bound to talk more about bridges another day, but let me just say that I adore them. I know some people get anxious on bridges, but I love driving on them. The views are awesome, there's lots of fresh air all around, so even when stuck in traffic (which I often am) I'm content.
Now tunnels - they're another story. I get nervous in tunnels. I speed through tunnels. And if there's a traffic back-up and (heaven forbid) I get stopped in a tunnel, I have to immediately practice deep breathing to avoid a panic attack.
And while I'm veering way off topic, I must say that the inmates in San Quentin have AMAZING views. Actually, I don't even know if they get to appreciate them ?? If not, what a shame.
But I've digressed. Back to Santa Rosa.
So my need to see real fall colors has been quenched (for now). But that small taste has me wanting to kick around some dried leaves and feel their crunch underfoot. Oh man, that's the best.

Day 1 :: The Bay Area
Now I realize this is sort of a cheat, since I'm tagging an entire region, but my internal judge sees this post as setting the scene for the whole month, so she's allowing it.
The thing is I've lived here 12 years, and it's begun to feel.... heavy. I say that because I often focus on the tough part of living an urban life. My commute. Real estate prices. The square footage (or lack thereof) in our home. Public school lotteries (!) The mouse who's taken up residence in our bedroom wall. And on and on.
But I know the Bay Area is amazing and special, I just tend to overlook the awesomeness in my daily routine. (The coastal fog has quite literally clouded my view.) But for the month I want to make a conscious effort to start looking at San Francisco for what it is. A destination. A city full of culture, beauty, and charm. My home.
And while I live in San Francisco - I work in Oakland, shop for fabric in Berkeley, frequent the Target in Colma, stock up on meatballs from Emeryville's Ikea. And we have friends scattered up and down the coast. So today I'm appreciating the entire Bay Area and all it has to offer. I mean, just look at that view!

31 Days
I created this blog nearly 5 years ago. And wrote one post. Not cool, Amy. Not cool. Then I got distracted / scared / uncertain and didn't move forward.
I have a family blog that is much easier to update since the focus and point are clear. The problem with this space is that I haven't found my purpose yet. So I've waited. And waited. And waited.
When I saw a 31 day blogging challenge on one of my favorite blogs it seemed like a good place to begin.
THE CHALLENGE: 31 Days
MY TOPIC OF CHOICE: Appreciation
You see, I've lived in San Francisco for over 10 years, and I'm realizing I take for granted all that is amazing about this place - and my life here. (I almost titled this series "Granted, For Take" but then thought it would be a little too out there. And I can't move forward with an out there blog, if I haven't determined if that's part of the online "me" yet - you know? Creating the right tone with the written word is still much of a mystery to me.)
Anyway, back on topic:

Anyway, back on topic:

Each day I'm going to push myself to recognize and appreciate something I normally overlook. As the month goes on I'll post a link to each new day below. My first thought is to make it specific to SF (hence the bridge in my photo - courtesy of my husband, Matt), but we'll see how that goes. I'm not making any promises, just going to see which way the wind blows.
These 31 days are aiming to shift my current perspective a little, and allow the great stuff a chance to shine. And given this underused blog a little direction and purpose.
